Shopify SEO Checklist: 15 Steps to Rank Your Store Higher
Optixfusion Team 2 min read
Shopify gives you a solid starting point for SEO: hosting, SSL and an automatic sitemap are handled for you. But most stores still miss easy wins that keep them off page one. Use this checklist to find and fix them.
Technical foundations
- Connect Google Search Console. Verify your domain and submit
yourstore.com/sitemap.xml. This is where Google tells you about indexing problems. - Use one primary domain. Make sure every other version (with and without
www, and themyshopify.comaddress) redirects to your main domain. - Fix duplicate product URLs. Many themes link to products through collection paths like
/collections/shoes/products/runner. Update your theme so product links point to the clean/products/runnerURL. - Keep tag and filter pages out of the index. Tag pages create thin, near-duplicate content. Add a
noindexrule for them in your theme. - Set up 301 redirects whenever you delete or rename a product or collection, in Online Store → Navigation → URL Redirects.
Collection and product pages
Collection pages usually target your most valuable keywords, such as “women’s running shoes”. Treat them like landing pages.
- Write a unique title and meta description for every collection and product. Keep titles under about 60 characters and include the main keyword near the start.
- Add helpful copy to collection pages. A short intro above the products and a longer buying guide or FAQ below give Google something to rank.
- Write original product descriptions. Don’t copy the manufacturer’s text, because hundreds of other stores use the same words.
- Use descriptive image alt text, such as “black leather Chelsea boot, side view”, not “IMG_2041”.
- Link between related pages: collections to sub-collections, products to related products, and blog posts to the collections they mention.
Structured data
- Check your product schema. Product, Offer and AggregateRating markup lets Google show price, stock and star ratings in results. Test pages with Google’s Rich Results Test.
- Add breadcrumb and organization schema to help Google understand your site structure and brand.
Speed and Core Web Vitals
- Remove apps you don’t use. Many apps leave scripts behind even after you uninstall them.
- Compress and size images properly, and lazy-load images below the fold. Shopify serves WebP automatically when you use its image filters.
Content
- Publish content that answers buyer questions. Buying guides, comparisons and how-to articles attract links and bring in shoppers earlier in their journey.
